COLOMBIA: Uribe candidate may need to rebrand as moderate centrist

Colombia’s right-wing opposition Centro Democrático (CD) chose Senator Paloma Valencia on 15 December as its candidate for the presidential election in May 2026. Hailing from the country’s traditional elite and trailing by far in opinion polls, Valencia could be compelled to position herself as a middle-of-the-road alternative to the current left-of-centre frontrunner, Iván Cepeda, and his closest challenger, Abelardo de la Espriella, on the far-right.
