BOLIVIA: Paz’s bold moves risk triggering protests

Bolivia’s new President Rodrigo Paz has hit the ground running since taking office on 8 November with a pledge to reform the economy and unpick the legacy of nearly two decades of rule by the left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). Paz made two major announcements this week, eliminating fuel subsidies and establishing a ‘hydrocarbons truth commission’ tasked with exposing corruption in the oil and gas sector under former presidents Evo Morales (2006-2019) and Luis Arce (2020-2025).
