MEXICO: Shoring up Canadian trade ties

A delegation of Canadian government officials and hundreds of business representatives visited Mexico this week in a sign of the appetite to shore up economic ties between the two countries. The trip comes at a crucial time, with the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) due by 1 July. US President Donald Trump has indicated that he is seeking to fully renegotiate the deal or even walk away from it completely. The meetings between Canada and Mexico may be an attempt to demonstrate the strength of North American economic relations in the face of such threats. They may also be viewed as part of efforts to ensure that the Mexico-Canada trade relationship remains strong even if the USMCA is scrapped.
