MEXICO: Drama at the education ministry

Mexico’s federal education ministry (SEP) has been the site of a heated dispute in the past week. Marx Arriaga, the head of the general directorate of educational materials (DGME), was notified of his dismissal on 13 February but refused to leave, barricading himself inside his office. The incident once again suggests that not all is harmonious within the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), with the party looking increasingly split between those aligned with President Claudia Sheinbaum and those exclusively loyal to her predecessor – and mentor – former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024).
