PERU: Balcázar faces rocky start with corruption trial looming

Peru’s new President José María Balcázar had only been in the job for two days before a court revealed on 20 February that he is due to stand trial in June, for allegedly embezzling funds during his tenure as the dean of the Lambayeque region’s bar association. This raises the possibility of yet another presidential impeachment process, although legislators may decide that, with the 12 April general elections just six weeks away, it is not in their interests to cause yet another spasm of political instability.
