VENEZUELA: US focus shifts to mining sector
Having successfully dictated a sweeping reform to Venezuela’s hydrocarbon law in late January, US President Donald Trump’s administration is now turning its attention to the country’s mining sector. This was a key topic of discussion during a 4-5 March visit to Caracas by US Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, who was accompanied by an international business delegation and highlighted the potential for major investment flows into Venezuelan mineral production. Just four days later, the national assembly approved a new mining law in the first of two votes it will face.
