The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) condemned Peru on 5 March for the forced sterilisation and subsequent death of Celia Ramos Durand in 1997 during the so-called national reproductive health and family planning programme of the authoritarian government of Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), which primarily targeted poor, indigenous women. The timing of the ruling comes at a critical time with presidential and congressional elections due on 12 April and the most recent poll suggesting that the late Fujimori’s daughter Keiko, who is running for the right-wing Fuerza Popular (FP), has edged ahead of Rafael López Aliaga of the far-right Renovación Popular (RP) in the presidential race.End of preview - This article contains approximately 441 words.
