It has long been a demand of the Venezuelan opposition that the country’s leadership should be brought to The Hague to face justice for their alleged role in crimes against humanity. President Delcy Rodríguez did stand before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Dutch city on 11 May, although she was there to present the closing arguments in Venezuela’s territorial dispute with Guyana over the Essequibo region. The standoff may now be approaching some form of resolution, although Venezuela has questioned the legitimacy of the ICJ proceedings and will no doubt continue to claim sovereignty over the Essequibo in the event of an adverse verdict.End of preview - This article contains approximately 615 words.
