JAMAICA: JPG pulls out of bananas

The Jamaica Producers Group (JPG) announced on 22 September that it was ceasing banana production in Jamaica for export to the United Kingdom. The JPG's chairman, Charles Johnston, said that the JPG will now concentrate on growing less vulnerable crops, such as cassava and breadfruit, for the snack segment of its operations. He blamed four years of hurricanes wrecking the banana crop for the decision.
