BRAZIL: PT grandee steps down over Banco Master probe

Senator Jaques Wagner, of Brazil’s ruling left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), announced on 24 June that he will step away from his role as the governing coalition’s leader in the senate. This decision comes as he has been implicated in the high-profile Banco Master corruption investigation, which has already damaged the reputations of prominent right-wing opposition figures and could now damage the popularity of the government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
