MEXICO: Domestic abuse in the spotlight
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has vowed zero impunity and called for the full weight of the law to be applied after videos emerged appearing to show the former CEO of state-run oil firm Pemex, Víctor Rodríguez Padilla, violently abusing his wife. The incident has brought the issue of domestic abuse to the forefront in Mexico, with the government’s next steps likely to come under much scrutiny given Sheinbaum’s pledge to tackle gender violence and boost women’s rights.
