CHILE: Kast seeks to de-escalate tensions in coalition

Chile’s President José Antonio Kast is trying to overcome internal divisions within his ruling coalition. Kast held a meeting with the party presidents of all government-allied parties in La Moneda presidential palace on 3 July shortly after an attempt to push through a constitutional accusation, or impeachment, against the former finance minister Nicolás Grau in the left-wing administration of Gabriel Boric (2022-2026) was thrown out by the senate due to the opposition of the traditional right-wing Chile Vamos coalition [WR-26-26]. A further meeting four days later of deputies and senators from the Partido Republicano (PR), the party on whose ticket he was elected, suggests Kast is still managing the fallout from the episode.
