BRAZIL: Milei supports Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential bid

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the main right-wing contender in the presidential election in October, officially launched his candidacy in an event in São Paulo on 25 July. Argentina’s President Javier Milei, an ally of Brazil’s far-right ‘Bolsonarismo’ movement, also attended the event and gave a speech lambasting President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as well as Brazilian supreme court (STF) justice Alexandre de Moraes, the presiding judge of the case that culminated in the conviction last year of Flávio’s father, former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), who was found guilty of plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election. Milei and Lula have never been on friendly terms, but the Argentine leader’s visit and vocal endorsement of Lula’s main rival in the Brazilian election has further deteriorated their already fraught ties.
