MEXICO: Government moves on high-profile cases
Mexico’s government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced arrests in relation to two high-profile cases in recent days. The first came on 30 July, with the arrest of the alleged top mastermind in the murder of Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, the outspoken, tough-on-crime mayor of Uruapan municipality, Michoacán state, who was shot dead at a Day of the Dead event last year. The second arrest related to the femicide of an influencer, Valeria Márquez, who was killed while livestreaming on social media in May last year. Both cases were notable for their brazen nature, the well-known profiles of the victims, and what they demonstrated about political and gender violence, respectively. The arrests are a boost for Sheinbaum, whose security strategy has focused on upping intelligence and investigation work.
