MEXICO: Insecurity threatens Michoacán avocado trade
Mexico’s government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum has bolstered security in Michoacán, the country’s main avocado-producing state, after the US suspended avocado export inspections in the state, citing insecurity. While the US restarted inspections days later, the incident reflects how the activities of criminal groups in Michoacán are affecting the state’s crucial avocado industry, with agricultural workers frequently falling victim to extortion and other crimes. It also comes as the Mexican government is continuing to face pressure from the US administration of President Donald Trump to crack down on organised crime.
