MEXICO: Patching up relations with Peru
The governments of Mexico and Peru have restored diplomatic relations. This comes almost a year after Peru severed bilateral ties in November 2025, after Mexico granted asylum to Peru’s former prime minister Betssy Chávez, who was on trial for conspiracy to commit rebellion. On 7 August Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed Peru’s decision to grant safe passage to Chávez. The move signals a rapprochement following years of bilateral tensions and indicates that Peru’s new government led by President Keiko Fujimori is prioritising pragmatism over ideology in its foreign relations. The reconciliation between the two is also positive news for the Pacific Alliance, a trade bloc comprising Mexico, Peru, Chile, and Colombia.
