PANAMA: Martinelli and Varela seal alliance

Presidential frontrunner ahead of May's elections, Ricardo Martinelli, of the opposition Cambio Democrático (CD), recently struck an alliance with Juan Carlos Varela, who had been running on the ticket of the main opposition Partido Panameñista (formerly Arnulfista). The move, which ended weeks of speculation in the local media, has already benefitted Martinelli, with polls showing him some 20 percentage points ahead of his closest rival, Balbina Herrera of the ruling Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD).
