The most recent survey by local pollsters Unimer, published on 10
February shows the ruling Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) on course to win the
next presidential election in February 2010. While there remains a high
proportion of undecided voters (22%), public support for the government's
handling of the economy, which has likely entered recession, bodes well for
President Oscar Arias and his party. The less established leftwing opposition
Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC), which was only narrowly defeated in 2006, has
