BRAZIL: Bolsonarismo galvanised amid judicial infighting
The high-profile Banco Master fraud investigation has intensified a major internal crisis at Brazil’s supreme court (STF). Officials have clashed over the handling of the Banco Master case, with STF justice André Mendonça, the presiding judge in the investigation, issuing an order on 8 September to suspend the director of the federal police (PF), Andrei Rodrigues, for allegedly carrying out illegal surveillance. But the following day, Mendonça’s order was reversed. The back-and-forth decisions between rival judges have undermined the credibility of the judiciary. The crisis has also strengthened the rhetoric of the far-right populist Bolsonarismo movement, which has long criticised the STF justices, such as Alexandre de Moraes.
