PARAGUAY: Congress moves to address healthcare crisis
Paraguay’s senate has approved the creation of a special commission to address “the crisis in the healthcare system”. This comes after weeks of strikes and protest action led by Paraguay’s doctors’ union (Sinamed) and amid mass resignations from public sector doctors and other healthcare workers, who are demanding a pay rise and denouncing a shortage of medical supplies and poor working conditions. While the government led by President Santiago Peña has worked to address some of the doctors’ demands, it states that the stipulated pay rise is not viable. In recent days legislators from across the political spectrum have highlighted the importance of reaching a resolution with doctors.
