BRAZIL: Lula repeats sovereignty rhetoric at UN

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has framed Brazil’s upcoming election as a defence of democracy against what he perceives to be domestic far-right threats and US interference. Addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Lula portrayed himself as a defender of national interests against foreign pressure. Despite making veiled criticisms against US President Donald Trump, Lula also said earlier this week that Brazil is “not anti-American” and emphasised that his government is continuing to pursue dialogue with the Trump administration regarding tariffs.
