ECUADOR: Court verdict prompts questions over strikes on fishing vessels

A lawyer representing 32 crewmembers of Ecuadorean fishing boats that were sunk by the US in the Pacific announced on 7 October that they have been found not guilty of drug trafficking. This was the first of three trials in Ecuador of around 90 crewmembers from five fishing boats targeted by the US. As well as the open involvement of the US Department of Defense in the military strikes, media reports have pointed to the covert involvement of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which is reportedly running surveillance flights from El Salvador.
