BRAZIL: Uphill vista for PT as campaigning begins

Campaigning for this year's municipal elections is now officially underway. The ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), which had set itself the herculean task of contesting 5,300 municipalities (more than twice as many as in 2000, this time including all state capitals), may find the going even harder than expected, with some of its bastions facing credible challenges and its alliances at federal level looking very shaky in the towns and cities.
