URUGUAY: Astori makes bid for presidency

The economy minister, Danilo Astori, announced eagerly anticipated tax reforms at the tail end of July. The reforms are crucial to his prospects for succeeding President Tabaré Vázquez in next year's elections. On 11 August Astori announced his resignation as finance minister (to be effective from September) so that he could compete for the Frente Amplio's presidential nomination.
