After 61 years of political hegemony, the
Partido Colorado (PC) now looks rudderless. It struggled to keep internal
divisions in check while in power, but these are sharpening now that it is in
opposition, with bitter recriminations between the component factions. In
September the faction of the party that supports former president Nicanor Duarte
appointed Senator Lilian Samaniego as party president. This infuriated the
faction loyal to Osvaldo Domínguez Dibb, a wealthy businessman and inveterate
opponent of Duarte: Domínguez Dibb had been party president since 31
July.
