BRAZIL: After mass protest, threat of a general strike

The people who turned out by the thousand just over a week ago to march in protest at the government's economic policies still see themselves, on the whole, as allies of President Lula da Silva. Unimpressed by recent indicators showing shrinking unemployment as well as economic expansion, they feel that reactivation has been too slow and insufficient. The organisers have warned that their next step may be a general strike.
