After announcing the release of five hostages in December [RA-10-12],
the maximum leader of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc),
'Alfonso Cano' (Guillermo Sáenz), released a video message on 7 January in which
he warned that the group would “step up all its activities" in 2011. The failed
attempt by the 'Teófilo Forero' column to capture the town of San Vicente del
Caguán, a historical Farc domain in the southern department of Caquetá, on the
same day, seemed to reinforce Cano's message that they will fight to the
