EL SALVADOR: Saca sees gangs, not al-Qaida, as main threat

As far as security threats go, President Elí­as Antonio Saca has been making it clear that he is far more concerned about the homegrown variety, and particularly the street gangs known as maras, than the purported warnings from al-Qaida offshoots that El Salvador would suffer attacks at home if it sent a new contingent of troops to Iraq [WR-04-34]. Indeed, he has been sounding a very sceptical note on much of what is being said about al-Qaida in other parts of Central America.
