ECUADOR: Nebot demands autonomy for Guayaquil - and others

Anyone arriving from eastern Bolivia would have had a sense of déja vu in Guayaquil, Ecuador's business capital, on 26 January. Tens of thousands of people had filled the streets at the behest of the mayor, Jaime Nebot, holding aloft placards which proclaimed, Guayaquil Independiente ('independent Guayaquil'). Nebot took advantage of the occasion to issue a call for the establishment of what he called 'solidary autonomy' for the provinces of Ecuador.
