BEEF: Lula tries to prise open Russia
President Lula da Silva started an official visit to Russia on 17 October. The outbreak of foot and mouth prompted Russia to ban imports of Brazilian beef. Russia is the biggest single market for Brazilian beef. In the first nine months of this
year Brazil exported US$406m worth of beef to Russia. Russia only started buying Brazilian beef again in March this year, after it was satisfied that the outbreak in Amazonas last year had been dealt with.
