EL SALVADOR: FMLN threatened with another top-level defection

The opposition Frente Farabundo Martí­ para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) is threatened with another high-profile defection which could harm its chances in the legislative and municipal elections due in 10 months' time: that of the current mayor of San Salvador, Carlos Rivas Zamora. Only two weeks ago, 300 members of the FMLN resigned, and their leaders have set up a new, rival party.
