ECUADOR: Government pleased as protests peter out

The fear at the beginning of the week, that the government could be brought down by a wave of extra-parliamentary protest, is ebbing. Yesterday was supposed to be the big day for the opposition: in fact the demonstrations were little more than token in both Quito and Guayaquil. This was because there were clear splits between the various indigenous groups opposed to the government of President Lucio Gutiérrez. The main indigenous group, Conaie, was conspicuous by its absence.
