COLOMBIA: Coca production down sharply

Coca production in Colombia fell 32% over the first seven months of this year according to a UN report. The director of the UN anti-drug programme, Klaus Nyholm, said that the aerial fumigation programme was mainly responsible for the fall in output. Despite the success, Nyholm said more needed to be done before victory could be claimed: 'The current government has done more to enforce the law in one year than any previous governments; but we are still a long way from a solution, and meanwhile the drug traffickers, the paramilitaries, and the rebels are continuing to confiscate land from the peasants.'
