MEXICO: Government embarrassed over Romero Deschamps

The government's high profile drive to curb corruption seems to have run into the sand over the most important case, Pemexgate. This involved the oilworkers union siphoning off US$160m from the state oil company Pemex. Most of the money was used to finance the Partido Revolucionario Institucional's election campaign in 2000. The government was thwarted last week in its attempt to strip a PRI senator, Ricardo Aldana, of his immunity so that he could be charged.
