COLOMBIA: US backs Uribe over human rights

President Alvaro Uribe was given a much-needed boost yesterday when US Secretary of State Colin Powell praised his human rights record. Uribe met Powell shortly after delivering a speech to the UN General Assembly in which he toned down his recent rhetoric against NGOs critical of his human rights' record but nevertheless reserved his right to disagree. Powell also praised Colombia's progress in tackling the drugs trade.
