The foreign trade minister, Raul Diez Canseco, resigned after the
media hounded him for alleged nepotism. Congress has just started an
investigation into whether Diez Canseco favoured his girlfriend's father with a
tax break and her cousins with jobs. 'In the last few days I have been the
object of a media campaign, filled with half-truths, that broke all boundaries
of ethics by digging into my private life', Diez Canseco said at a press
conference. He still hopes to keep his position as Peru's first vice-president,
which is in theory irrevocable during the tenure of President Alejandro Toledo.
