HAITI: Rice flies in, seeks review of rejected candidacies

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice made a lightning visit to Port-au-Prince in what appeared to be a bid to coax the interim government to allow the registration of Lavalas candidate Gérard Jean-Juste [WR-05-38]. She put the message more obliquely in a joint press conference with Prime Minister Gérard Latortue: 'Those who want to participate in this election should be allowed to participate.' Latortue was defensive but hinted that this could happen if the US were to make a matching concession on its deportation policy.
