MEXICO: Cardinal defends right to engage in politics

The archbishop of Mexico City, Cardinal Norberto Rivera, last week publicly defended the Roman Catholic church's right to engage in politics, 'just as Jesus did'. In order to ward off the usual criticism that this means siding with the most overtly Catholic party, the ruling Partido Acción Nacional (PAN), the cardinal said that the church's political engagement should take place outside the political parties and without aspiring to 'the power of this world'.
