A crowd of 200,000 dutifully turned out to listen to President Fidel Castro
in Havana on 21 June. Castro used the rally to denounce the tough new policies
adopted by the Bush administration on Cuba. The main thrust of Castro's
35-minute peroration, which he described as his 'second open letter' to US
President George Bush, was to warn the US against its plans to usher in a
democratic transition in Cuba. 'They will not have one day, one hour, one
minute, even one second to prevent the military and political leadership of the
country from being immediately taken by my successors,' Castro said, adding that
'The orders of what is to be done have already been given.'
