CHILE: Lagos seeks regional leadership role

President Ricardo Lagos seems determined to use the last leg of his presidency to revive Chile's bid for a leadership role in Latin America. Playing on the rebound from the recent Summit of the Americas, he is projecting Chile as a free-trade champion with a difference and has pointedly struck an alliance with Mexico's Vicente Fox with that in view, and in the process has distanced Chile from Brazil and Venezuela.
