Peru's political class has finally started treating Ollanta Humala [WR-05-47] as a force to be reckoned with - indeed, as a real threat to be countered. Rival presidential candidates still avoid mentioning his name, but have started alluding transparently to him, while off the record their parties feed the media with information designed to discredit him. He is depicted variously as a stooge for the pro-Fujimori camp, a puppet of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez , an Andean Hitler and an ally of both the coca growers and the Bolivian presidential candidate Evo Morales.
