PERU: Garcí­a hits all the right notes in Washington

President Alan Garcí­a took the opportunity to spell out his new political creed during a visit to the White House on 11 October. "There is a new fundamentalism in South America - Andean fundamentalism," he said, adding that this "fundamentalism" was born of a desire to take the continent back to the 60s and 70s, to state models and nationalisation. Peru, in contrast, envisaged its role as "promoting democracy and achieving friendship without threats in our region," Garcí­a said.
