NICARAGUA: US accused of intervening in elections
Nicaragua's two most influential daily papers, El Nuevo Diario and La Prensa, printed an "open letter on US intervention in Nicaragua's election" sent by the US NGOs Nicaragua Network and Quixote Center/Quest for Peace on 14 October. The letter's publication came five days after Roger Noriega, the former assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere Affairs, wrote a piece for The Washington Post, bemoaning the fact that "one of the cornerstones of Latin (and particularly Central) America's democratic transformation is sliding back toward the abyss."
