Exports surge. Exports increased by 15% in 2006 to US$46.57bn, a new record. Imports outstripped exports, however, growing by 19% to US$34.16bn, making a trade surplus of US$12.41bn. The economy minister, Felisa Miceli, emphasised an increase in manufactured goods, which now account for 32% of foreign sales, but Argentina remains dependent on primary products, which made up 55% of total exports. Agricultural products made up one third of total exports. Two of the country's big farming organisations began fresh protest action on 22 January as expected.
