JAMAICA: Simpson Miller could pay for delaying elections

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller is yet to confirm the date for general elections, which are constitutionally due before the end of October. Ever since Simpson Miller won a leadership election in February 2006 after her predecessor P J Patterson retired, there has been speculation in the press and political circles, that she would call a snap election to consolidate her popularity. She constantly refrained from doing so and there is now a genuine concern within the ruling People's National Party (PNP) that the opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), hungry for a return to power for the first time since 1989, could be ready to mount a serious challenge.
