President Alan García fought to break the impasse in the US Congress this week over an FTA which he described as "vital" for Peru's development and the preservation of a strong democracy. His visit to the US was a success. The support García received from President George W. Bush to work with Congress to secure approval for the FTA was somewhat muted compared with when he last visited, in October (Bush refused to answer questions in a joint press conference in the White House on 23 April).
