For the first time in 100 years the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR), nominally the second largest party in Argentina, will not present its own presidential candidate. Gerardo Morales, the party president, this week cemented his support for Roberto Lavagna, the leader of the opposition coalition Una Nación Avanzada (UNA), by agreeing to be his running mate. Morales does not bring the whole of the UCR with him, however, as loyalties are irrevocably split between support for Lavagna, President Néstor Kirchner and Margarita Stolbizer, the UCR secretary general who wanted the party to present its own candidate.
