PARAGUAY: Lugo could profit from split in Colorado camp

The ruling Partido Colorado (PC) is engaged in bitter infighting ahead of primary elections in December that will define the candidate who will more than likely face the charismatic former Roman Catholic priest, Fernando Lugo, in next year's presidential contest. President Nicanor Duarte endorsed the candidacy of Blanca Ovelar after it became clear his efforts to alter the constitution to seek re-election would not prosper. He is battling his Vice-President, Luis Alberto Castiglioni, who launched his own candidacy on 11 June. Castiglioni has the support of the stronista faction.
