The head of congress, Jorge Cevallos, made a significant conciliatory
gesture to President Rafael Correa last week. Cevallos said that a majority of
legislators would be prepared to curtail their four-year term and hold fresh
legislative elections in October 2008 when the constituent assembly is scheduled
to finish drafting the constitution. This compromise comes less than a week
after left-wing parties forged a coalition that pledged to push for the
immediate dissolution of congress in line with comments by Correa in recent
