BOLIVIA: Bonosol proves major bone of contention

Bolivia celebrated 25 years of democracy on 10 October with President Evo Morales accusing the opposition-controlled Senate of obstructing his rule and the main opposition party, Podemos, accusing the government of showing signs of authoritarianism. The government is at loggerheads with the region yet again after announcing that it plans to use profits from the direct hydrocarbons tax (IDH) to provide financial assistance to elderly Bolivians through a 'solidarity bonus' known as Bonosol, a Bs1,800 (US$235) annuity for over-65s paid out annually for life.
